I was going to do a podcast for Wire, but I was having a hard time choosing five songs from their early recordings/b-sides album alone, so I limited this to their early years (before their first breakup). Wire were more of an "arty" punk band in the late 70s, and eventually evolved from their minimalistic guitar-rock sound to incorporate keyboards...not to mention write songs that were longer than a minute or two.

22: Tim Armstrong
Tim Armstrong might not have a good voice, but it's definitely distinct. He got his start with Operation Ivy (going by the name "Lint"). After that band broke up, he went on to success with Rancid, and recently had a weird rap-punk side project Transplants.

20: Lookout! Records
I was a big fan of pop-punk growing up, and Berkeley, CA could be considered its birthplace. At the very least, some of the best bands came from the Bay Area. But even if a great pop-punk band wasn't from California (Screeching Weasel from Chicago, The Queers from New Hampshire) they often ended up on Lookout! Records.
Lookout! releases a lot more than just pop-punk, especially in more recent years (although I think they're in financial trouble...how did they mismanage money from Green Day's early releases?). But here are five songs by bands that come to my mind when I think of Lookout.

19: Bass-Playing Lead Singers
A friend posed the question: besides Geddy Lee (of Rush), who are some lead singers who play bass? My mind quickly went blank, and after thinking for a little while I got the two other obvious ones: Paul McCartney (Beatles, Wings) and Les Claypool (Primus). Here are four others -- after starting off with the band who caused this issue to be raised in the first place.
